Larnaca District Administration launched a new sweep operation on Thursday morning to remove caravans and demolish wooden shacks built on the shoreline in front of a fenced area earmarked for part of the Land of Tomorrow development, uncovering one structure containing asbestos in the process.

Demolition of the wooden shacks has already begun. The asbestos-containing structure will be removed by District Administration officers wearing special protective suits who have taken specific safety measures.

Phileleftheros first raised the issue last Saturday, publishing images from two beaches along the Larnaca-Dhekelia road that had been illegally occupied, with no authority acting to end the illegality at the time.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou then intervened, instructing the Larnaca District Administration to move the caravans and shacks.
Nine structures, most of them wooden, had been built in the Land of Tomorrow area. Three caravans were also found there and were issued notices last Tuesday, during a sweep operation carried out near Larnaca Nautical Club. One of the structures had a veranda built with a sea view.
