According to police, only two open-air stadiums actually meet the safety and legal requirements for hosting matches. The rest? Riddled with problems: patchy CCTV coverage, lax ticket checks, sloppy stewarding. If a ground genuinely can’t stretch to a proper high-quality camera system, the “state-of-the-art” job as everyone likes to call it, then it needs to go cap in hand to the state and ask for help.
Letting a problem fester for years with the state’s blessing does nobody any credit. Right now we’ve got CCTV that, if trouble kicks off, wouldn’t identify a single culprit. Meanwhile, every fan sits wherever they fancy. Laws get passed and then just gather dust on paper. So if we actually want safe stadiums, it’s time to do what the police have been shouting about for years.
