Raffaele Fitto, Executive Vice President, has been designated by the European Commission as the Special Representative for Cyprus, according to a press release.

In his position, he will contribute to the settlement process within the United Nations framework, working closely with María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus.

Executive Vice-President Fitto’s designation reflects the Commission’s “strong commitment to the reunification of Cyprus,” the press release said, continuing to state the Commission’s aim to achieve a “functional and viable comprehensive settlement,” with the appropriate UN Security Council resolutions, while still following the European Union’s principles, values, and legislation.

Executive Vice-President Fitto enters this position with “long-standing experience,” the press release stated, in European governance, regional cooperation and institutional dialogue.

The Commission’s efforts to progress towards a “comprehensive settlement” of the Cyprus issue is supported by this, the press release added.
