WEEE Cyprus pushes for €1.3 million e-waste and medicine recycling plant in Dali

The electronic and electrical waste management body WEEE Cyprus Ltd is moving forward with plans to create a modern recycling plant for e-waste, batteries, and expired household medicines in the South Nicosia-Idalio municipality.

The project involves converting an existing industrial warehouse into a model facility for receiving, sorting, dismantling, and temporarily storing waste, with the total cost estimated at €1.3 million.

Flanxo Holdings Ltd is implementing the project, with the non-profit organisation WEEE Cyprus Ltd acting as the primary manager. WEEE Cyprus is the only licensed collective compliance scheme for electrical and electronic waste management in Cyprus and works closely with Green Dot (Cyprus) to run the system.

The new recycling plant will have the capacity to manage approximately 5,190 tonnes of waste per year. During operations, the facility will focus on receiving, sorting, and temporarily storing large and small electrical appliances, screens, televisions, refrigerators, air conditioning units, batteries, toner and ink cartridges, fluorescent lightbulbs, and expired pharmaceutical products.

The investment aims to drastically cut the volume of waste sent to landfills while improving environmental quality through proper material recovery. The factory will operate as a station for reception, visual inspection, weighing, and manual sorting.

According to ten-year projections, the estimated annual volumes for each waste stream are:

  • Electrical and electronic waste (large/small appliances, screens, fridges, ACs, solar panels): 5,000 tonnes
  • Batteries: 90 tonnes
  • Toner and ink cartridges: 50 tonnes
  • Fluorescent lightbulbs: 35 tonnes
  • Expired household medicines: 15 tonnes

A key requirement for accepting any waste at the plant is that it must be completely free of liquid residues. The sorted materials will remain at the facility for a short period until they are collected by specialised licensed contractors.

The project will be developed on a 6,509-square-metre plot within the Category A Special Industrial Zone (heavy industrial) in Dali, making the facility fully compatible with local town planning zones.

Because the building already exists, construction work will be limited in scope and will last just four months. The work will involve tarmacking the outdoor area to seal the ground against pollution, creating a covered sorting space, and installing a weighbridge.
