Theatre of the Oppressed comes to Limassol in EU inclusion project

A free workshop in Limassol on May 30 will introduce an Erasmus+ project that brings together theatre, music and listening practices to promote social inclusion and intercultural dialogue.

The project, THEO-MUSIC, is built around the Theatre of the Oppressed, the method created by Brazilian playwright and director Augusto Boal, and combines it with Deep Listening practices and participatory music improvisation. It has been developed in Limassol and Rome over recent months through intensive training sessions bringing together artists, educators, social workers, community musicians and volunteers.

In Cyprus the project is coordinated by MUS-E Cyprus, a Limassol-based NGO and part of the international MUS-E network founded by the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, in collaboration with the Italian organisation GIOLLI COOP. Deep Listening practices were led by Teresa Dello Monaco, director of MUS-E Cyprus, while the Theatre of the Oppressed sessions in both cities were facilitated by the founder of GIOLLI COOP, a translator of Boal’s work into Italian.

The organisers say the project responds to integration and social cohesion challenges in Europe and Cyprus, particularly those affecting migrants and refugees, and aligns with the EU Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021-2027. A key outcome is a practical toolkit, alongside recorded seminars and video documentation from the training sessions.

The free four-hour workshop will be held at RESET’s Multifunctional Social Space in Limassol’s old town, on Heroes Square near the Cyprus University of Technology and the Rialto Theatre. It will introduce participants to the project’s methodologies and practical applications, and those attending will receive a Certificate of Participation. Admission is free, but registration is required.
