The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation is pressing on after losing its parliamentary seats, with president Stavros Papadouris telling Philenews the party has assessed its finances and can sustain itself for the next five years.

The centrist environmental party will cut its budget, Papadouris said, but will not be accepting outside contributions. “We never accepted contributions from anyone, as such contributions come with unreasonable demands,” he said.

The Ecologists’ Central Committee will meet on June 7 to review the election result. The meeting will also serve as an opportunity for the movement to make its own political assessments in connection with the House speakership process.

On DIKO leader Nikolaos Papadopoulos’s initiative to unite centrist parties that failed to enter parliament — an aim Papadopoulos set out on Sunday — Papadouris declined to pre-empt any decision by the movement’s collective bodies.

The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation was formed in 1996. It first entered parliament in 2001 and kept electing its representatives to the House until last Sunday.
