President Nikos Christodoulides has raised the possibility of a formal Cyprus settlement plan being submitted before the end of 2026, coinciding with the conclusion of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s current term.
Speaking in an interview with Alpha TV, the President revealed that behind-the-scenes consultations are underway, which may lead to breakthroughs in the long-stalled negotiations.
Christodoulides highlighted a recent meeting between Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara as a pivotal turning point.
According to the President, this encounter provided the “green light” necessary to advance meaningful discussions. In line with these developments, the UN Secretary-General is expected to convene a new informal multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue during the upcoming summer months.
High-level diplomatic maneuvers are reportedly being conducted as part of the preparations for this summit.
Beyond the Cyprus problem, the President addressed several key domestic policy initiatives:
Energy Negotiations: The government is currently engaged in discussions with major energy firms regarding the exploitation of natural gas within the Republic’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Electricity Costs: Plans are being finalised to implement measures aimed at reducing electricity prices for consumers by the end of the year.
