Livestock farmers took to the streets in the Palaiometocho area on Monday, blocking local roads in strong opposition to plans to transfer culled animals diseased with foot-and-mouth disease from other areas for burial at the site.
According to police, the protesters cut off roads in the area. Residents of Palaiometocho have also joined the demonstration, standing alongside the farmers and expressing concern over the potential consequences of burying the animals in the area.
The farmers argue that the practice violates EU protocols and regulations. They say the applicable procedures require that infected animals be buried close to the farm from which they originate, in order to limit the risk of spreading the disease.
