Fishers based in the seaside town of Vasiliki, Lefkas mounted an operation to collect a mysterious black drone, or unmanned surface vehicle (USV), that they found concealed in a sea cave on Cape Doukato, at the southernmost tip of the island. According to a Coast Guard announcement on Friday, the USV was turned over to the local Coast Guard and then to the national defence ministry, which has undertaken to keep and examine it. The incident has also been officially recorded.
The drone was spotted by fishers the previous day, on May 7, who approached it with caution, secured it and then towed it back to the port of Vasiliki, where they delivered it to the authorities. According to their report, the small craft still had its engine running when it was found, which has raised serious concerns about its origins and mission.
The craft was described as being of small size, black and capable of high speeds, with equipment that points to a military-type unmanned platform.
Greek security authorities are looking into the incident with great interest, as it is an unusual case of locating a military-type USV in Greek territorial waters.
