Iran’s new supreme leader threatens strikes on all US bases in region unless they close

Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has threatened to attack all US military bases in the region unless they are immediately closed, in his first statement since assuming leadership of the embattled country, read on state television.

In his statement, Khamenei also said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz should continue as a tool to pressure what he described as the enemy, and called for national unity, urging Iranians to participate in Quds Day.

Khamenei, the eldest son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts as supreme leader, consolidating the Khamenei family’s grip on power within the Islamic Republic.

Mojtaba Khamenei has sustained wounds to his legs, arm and shoulder in the US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that killed six of his family members, including his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
