France is bolstering Cyprus’s defence by sending missile systems, anti-drone technology, and a frigate, according to information obtained by CNA. The move follows recent events that have heightened security concerns on the island.
CNA reports that the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, received confirmation in the early hours of Tuesday from French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders had held two phone calls on Monday, during which Christodoulides requested the support.
Macron informed his Cypriot counterpart that France would deploy missile systems, anti-drone units, and a frigate to Cyprus, with a second frigate due to follow shortly.
Christodoulides also requested the deployment of a frigate from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a Monday phone conversation. Merz responded positively, and a formal decision from the German government is expected imminently.
