Cyprus Peace Council calls for anti-war rally in Limassol after drone strikes hit local UK bases

The Cyprus Peace Council has condemned the US and Israeli attacks against Iran and called on residents to join an anti-war demonstration in Limassol on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Monday, the council said the escalation in the Middle East confirmed its longstanding position that the British Bases in Cyprus represent “an anachronistic remnant of colonialism” and a permanent danger to the island and the wider region, and called for their closure.

The council said strikes on and around RAF Akrotiri demonstrated that military bases intensify tensions rather than resolve problems, and urged the Republic of Cyprus to demand that Britain disengage Cyprus from the conflict.

“It would be catastrophic if Cyprus becomes a target of retaliation in a military attack foreign to its interests,” the statement said.

The council also called on the Cypriot government to condemn the US-Israeli strikes on Iran as violations of international law, and to ensure the safety of Cypriot nationals in Middle Eastern countries.

The anti-war demonstration is scheduled for Tuesday, 3 March 2026, at 17:00 at the Limassol Molos amphitheatre.
