Animal welfare activists have called a protest outside Nicosia Police Headquarters demanding a full investigation into the alleged abduction of cats from outside a supermarket in Latsia.
According to a protest poster circulating online, the demonstration will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 2.30pm outside the Nicosia Police Headquarters.
Under the banner “No to cat abductions”, organisers are demanding an investigation into what they describe as the “abduction and disappearance” of the Lidl Latsia cats. The poster also refers to a “Cyprus-wide abduction”, reflecting broader concerns raised in recent weeks about reported cat disappearances in other areas.
The protest calls for “transparency”, “accountability” and “protection of strays”, while declaring that “animals are not objects” and “we will not remain silent”.
“The silence is complicity. Your presence is power,” the poster states, urging members of the public to attend.
Hashtags accompanying the call include #NoToAbduction, #ProtectCyprusCats and #JusticeForAnimals.
The demonstration follows weeks of public debate after complaints were filed on January 25 over the alleged removal of three sterilised cats from the Latsia supermarket car park. Police have confirmed that the case is under investigation and that statements are still being taken.
Authorities have not established criminal wrongdoing at this stage, and it remains unclear whether the various reports of cat disappearances across Cyprus are connected to the Latsia case.
Animal welfare groups and individuals have increasingly pressed for clarity from police on the progress of the investigation and on what steps, if any, have been taken to locate the missing animals.
