Police have found horrific torture videos on the phones of the 48-year-old suspect in the Larnaca shooting case, showing seven people being beaten in a casino room in Pyla.
The man stayed silent when questioned on Wednesday with his lawyers present. He’s back in Larnaca court on Friday for a detention renewal hearing.
Police are also charging a 27-year-old man who allegedly took part in one of the torture sessions.
Investigators are hunting for three of the victims shown in the videos and trying to work out why they were tortured.
Three were beaten to force them to pay debts owed to others, police sources said. Two were abducted and violently assaulted to make them “confess” to crimes allegedly committed against the 48-year-old.
Third case this month
The torture investigation marks the third criminal case against the well-known suspect in a matter of weeks.
He faces trial at Larnaca Permanent Criminal Court on 16 March over the 17 January shootout in central Larnaca and a separate assault in Pyla.
Businessmen tried to flip witness
Two businessmen, aged 43 and 47, were arrested during the shooting investigation for trying to get the complainant to change his story. Both face trial but are free under conditions.
The National Betting Authority announced on Wednesday it’s not renewing licences for BookieCo betting shops linked to the 47-year-old businessman.
