Britain has significantly bolstered its military presence in Cyprus amid growing concerns that a potential US strike on Iran could ignite a broader regional conflict.
According to a report by The Times, six F-35B stealth fighters took off from RAF Marham on Friday, February 6, 2026, headed for RAF Akrotiri. The deployment is specifically intended to defend the sovereign base area in the event of a dangerous escalation in the Middle East.
Strengthening Defensive Capabilities
The F-35s will reinforce the Typhoon fighter jets already stationed in Cyprus. While the Typhoons are permanently based at Akrotiri to conduct Operation Shader against Islamic State remnants in Iraq and Syria, the newly arrived F-35s have been deployed in a strictly defensive role.
This buildup follows a similar move last month, when four RAF Typhoons from the joint UK-Qatar No. 12 Squadron were deployed to Qatar at the request of the Qatari government due to regional instability.
Diplomatic Backdrop and Regional Context
The military reinforcement comes as the United States and Iran held critical talks in Oman, despite the massive military buildup in the region. This marked the first meeting between the two nations since US involvement in Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last June, which caused significant damage and halted previous diplomatic efforts.
- Iranian Stance: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the Oman talks as positive, stating that both sides agreed to proceed with further negotiations.
- US Stance: Washington’s position remains more ambiguous. Shortly after the conclusion of the talks in Amman, the US announced a new wave of sanctions targeting Iranian oil exports.
The deployment of the advanced F-35B jets signals the UK’s commitment to securing its strategic assets in the Eastern Mediterranean as the geopolitical situation remains volatile.
