Paralimni town square project revived as municipality seeks state funding

The Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality is moving forward with the redevelopment of its central square after a three-year delay caused by the loss of European funding.

Paralimni Mayor received the planning permit from Famagusta District Self-Government Organisation (EOA) President Yiannis Karousos last Thursday. The municipality is now seeking state funding to include the redevelopment in official urban projects and begin construction.

Estimated at €5 million, the “iconic” urban project will feature an events space, a park, monument areas, and extensive tree planting. The architectural design aims to create a central landmark that highlights the area’s three historic churches. A new water feature will also be installed to symbolically link the square with the local lake and the sea.

The redesigned square will have a capacity for 3,500 people. The municipality stressed that universal accessibility was a priority in the plans to ensure “every citizen can move unhindered across the entire surface of the square, in a friendly and pleasant environment.”

The square is one of three major projects intended to transform the centre of Paralimni. The second is an €8 million core regeneration project—which also lost its EU funding—involving pedestrianisation and the creation of new smaller squares. The third project is a multi-storey car park currently under construction next to the Town Hall at a cost of €6.7 million.

«These three projects compose a complete urban intervention of European standards, which is expected to upgrade the quality of life for residents, enhance the visitor experience and constitute a timeless landmark for Paralimni,» the municipality said in a statement.
