The House Transport Committee debated yesterday a proposal by DISY MP Nikos Georgiou to announce and publish in advance the general areas where mobile cameras and radar devices will operate. The Transport and Justice Ministries, as well as the Police, opposed adding such a provision.
What stood out during yesterday’s session, however, was the point raised by several MPs when addressing representatives from the three competent authorities. “You’ve made citizens your enemies,” they said, capturing precisely what drivers feel when they spot vans on the roads. Vans positioned in areas with 50-kilometre speed limits, just after traffic lights—where it’s all too easy when you’re pulling away to briefly exceed the permitted limit—or tucked round motorway bends so they can’t be seen from a distance. All these tactics have bred resentment amongst drivers, who see the vans as nothing more than an easy method for filling state coffers.
