Serious concern prevails within DISY headquarters over how to handle the cases of two suspended mayors who are party members, with the party’s Legal Council warning this morning that statutes contain no provisions for such situations.
The party’s Executive Bureau is meeting today in its regular session, where the cases of Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos and occupied Lefkoniko mayor Pieris Gypsiotes are expected to inevitably occupy proceedings, though no clear view yet exists on how the party should handle the issue.
There is concern within Pindarou about whether the party should take a decision to send a message that the issue concerns them and that there is decisiveness, according to sources.
The question is what that decision would be and whether it concerns suspension of membership or participation in the Political Bureau and Supreme Council of DISY, of which they are members.
However, the party’s Legal Council raised a “red flag” this morning, as such action is not provided for in the statutes and there is no provision clarifying what should be done for party members under police investigation.
Any decision on their membership status or participation in party collective bodies would automatically raise the issue of MP Nikos Sykas, for whom a decision was taken to remove him from the ballot but who continues to be a party member, member of collective bodies, and MP.
One possible scenario is to request that the two mayors voluntarily abstain from the party’s collective bodies.
