CID Headquarters investigators are examining a complaint filed by a Paphos businessman against Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos concerning an alleged serious offence, according to police.

Investigators are taking statements to gather evidence and verify the claims in the complaint, police said.

A separate investigation is under way into alleged domestic abuse involving the mayor and his wife in Paphos, authorities said.

Police spokesman Vyron Vyronos said Police are evaluating all information relating to the Paphos mayor case. Investigators are assessing all information and will take necessary actions, Vyronos said, adding that investigations continue.

The Interior Ministry is awaiting the official police response before deciding its next steps, specifically whether the alleged assault case is substantiated.

If police find evidence of wrongdoing by the Paphos mayor, the Interior Ministry will consult the Law Office, the government’s legal adviser, for a final decision on whether to suspend Phedonos.

However, if police determine there is no case against the mayor, the Interior Ministry will not seek a Law Office opinion and will not take any measures, including suspension.
