Limassol General Hospital has recorded a sharp rise in flu and Covid-19 admissions over the weekend, with health officials warning that a second wave of respiratory illness is hitting Cyprus.
Flu A patients at the hospital nearly doubled from 14 to 25, whilst coronavirus cases jumped from one to five, according to state health services organisation (SHSO).
SHSO spokesman Charalambos Charillaou told philenews the increase was concentrated in the Limassol district, where numbers changed significantly in recent days.
“We observe an increase in hospitalisations, mainly in the district of Limassol, where the numbers in the recent twenty-four hours have changed significantly,” Charillaou said.
“We had one patient with coronavirus in the hospital and today we have five, and we had 14 patients with flu A and today these patients became 25,” he said.
Charillaou said the rise was expected, noting that Cyprus typically sees a second wave of respiratory infections in late January and early February.
“We expected of course that there would be a new rise in our cases because usually at the end of January and beginning of February we always have a second wave, and it seems we’re seeing it now,” he said.
“Regarding virus activity in the community, the Ministry of Health should probably inform us about the data.”
