Police investigate alleged domestic violence claims against Paphos mayor

Cyprus police have launched an investigation into allegations circulating online in recent days concerning Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos and an alleged case of domestic violence against his wife.

Police spokesman Christodoulos Konsolos told the state broadcaster that the force had begun the ex officio inquiry on Sunday. He said the matter involved domestic violence issues and personal data concerns, with various allegations attributed to individuals.

Konsolos said police would investigate and announce its findings once evidence emerges that clarifies the situation.

Medical certificates from a hospital have been posted on social media in recent days and are expected to be examined by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.

Mayor’s wife denies making police complaint

The mayor’s wife responded with a public statement on social media, denouncing what she described as a coordinated attack against her family aimed at causing political damage to her husband.

She said she felt compelled to speak out to protect her family from malice and gossip, whilst clarifying she needs no form of protection or “self-appointed protectors with ulterior motives”.

Those who know her in her workplace and family circle know she is not a victim and feels no fear, she stated.

The mayor’s wife described her 20-year relationship with her husband as harmonious, calling him a wonderful, dignified and honest person. She said she was proud of his character and the political battles he fights, and appealed for political games to be kept away from her family.

In a subsequent post, she declared she had never reported her husband to police, calling claims that she had filed a complaint or given statements entirely false.

She questioned why someone would make such claims, asking what interest they had, whether they were following instructions, and what they hoped to achieve.

She challenged those spreading allegations to consider whether they were insulting others without provocation and showing disrespect to children, questioning whether such people sought to awaken or mislead the public to serve their own purposes.
