Cyprus’s Kurdish community will hold a protest rally this evening outside the Limassol District Administration building over attacks by the al-Jolani Syrian regime in northeastern Syria.
The demonstration begins at 18:30.
According to an announcement from the Kurdish community, gangs affiliated with the regime and backed by Turkey have besieged Kobani in Rojava since Monday morning, 19 January, despite a ceasefire agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and Syrian Transitional Government.
Kobani sits at the western edge of Rojava, the area controlled by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
Cyprus is closely monitoring the situation and has called on all parties to fully implement the ceasefire, the Foreign Ministry said Tuesday on X.
The situation is critical, the Kurdish community in Cyprus said in an announcement. They explained that if the front held by Kurdish fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) breaks, “jihadists will murder civilians as they did in Aleppo and the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah areas in recent days”.
Volunteers from across Kurdistan are reaching Kobani at risk of their lives, under threat from the Turkish army monitoring the situation, they added.
The Foreign Ministry said the ceasefire implementation “is vital for peaceful integration, ensuring Syria’s unity and protecting the rights of the Kurdish population. We reaffirm our support for Syria’s stability as essential for regional security.”
The Kurds call on Cyprus, which assumed the EU presidency this semester, to raise its voice for Rojava and recognise that the threat won’t stop with the slaughter of the Kurdish people. They urge the media, political parties, organisations and society to broaden solidarity and speak about what is happening in Rojava.
