Violence exploded in the heart of Larnaca yesterday afternoon as rival criminal gangs engaged in a savage daylight battle on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue. Armed with axes, wooden clubs, and iron bars, over ten individuals clashed just 100 metres from the city’s Police Headquarters. Gunshots rang out during the pursuit, forcing terrified diners and pedestrians to flee for cover as the fight spilled past fast-food outlets and busy shops.
Police have arrested a 48-year-old Cypriot national at Larnaca Hospital, where he is being treated for head injuries. Investigators also raided a local apartment, arresting three men aged 26, 28, and 29 after discovering eight rounds of 9mm military-grade ammunition. Officers are currently hunting three more foreign nationals, aged 35, 26, and 20, in connection with the brawl. Forensic teams recovered two spent shell casings and bloodstains from the scene, while one vehicle has been seized and a second damaged car is being sought.
The conflict reportedly began when one group stormed a business on the avenue, possibly to enforce a protection racket. A rival faction retaliated, sparking a brutal chase through the streets. Police sources indicate that a primary suspect in the case is a notorious individual with a long criminal record who was recently released on bail for separate serious offences. The brazen nature of the attack, occurring at 3:30 pm in the city’s most crowded area, has sparked widespread public fury and put the police on high alert.
Justice Minister Costas Fytiris rushed to the city last night, admitting that “crime has become emboldened” and describing the incident as a clash between competing factions. He called on Parliament to urgently pass legislation to empower the police, acknowledging that the state currently lacks the necessary tools to stay ahead of organised crime. Heavy reinforcements, including rapid response units, have been deployed to Larnaca to prevent further escalation. Mayor Andreas Vyras also condemned the violence, stating that such scenes have no place in a modern city and demanding immediate, preventative measures.
