Media in Greece have covered the viral video that rocked Cyprus’s political establishment yesterday, which exposes alleged illegal campaign financing breaches by close associates of President Nikos Christodoulides and businesspeople.
The story featured on the front pages of Greek newspapers on Thursday. Ta Nea wrote that “a video sets fire to Nicosia,” whilst Kathimerini reported “political tremors in Cyprus due to video about black money.”
Efimerida ton Syntakton asked whether the situation represented “intertwining or slander,” whilst Dimokratia referred to a “hybrid attack against Cyprus” involving a strange video.
Former Syriza party leader Stefanos Kasselakis posted a statement on social media saying he had watched the video about “black money in Cyprus” specifically concerning President Christodoulides. He said he was not surprised, as other political leaders in Nicosia had explained to him how the system works when he was fighting on the issue in Greece.
Kasselakis highlighted the vulnerability of a president or prime minister when black money flows to them and their spouse, or “white” money through triangular transactions. He claimed the amounts heard in the video for Cyprus should be multiplied by at least tenfold for Greece.
The former Syriza leader said Christodoulides had always been friendly during their institutional meetings, but that he maintained reservations after the removal of Cyprus Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides. Kasselakis called on Christodoulides to resign, describing it as “the only honest path” and one that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has not chosen.
