Rivers, streams and dams have overflowed in the occupied areas following intense weather from storm Byron, with flooded roads and houses and muddy chaos prevailing across affected regions.
Rainwater height in some cases reached up to car roofs, whilst other vehicles appeared to be sinking into subsiding ground.
Serious problems have been recorded in occupied Nicosia and Kyrenia since yesterday, with floods occurring in the Kioneli, Agirta and Dikomo areas. The dam in Kioneli, which had been empty for a long period, overflowed.
The “mayor” of occupied Nicosia, Mehmet Harmanci, said all streams in the city have overflowed and, combined with the Kioneli dam overflow, the situation is dangerous.
A main road in occupied Nicosia between a school and the general hospital has been closed because it is below the stream level, making access to the school impossible.
Harmanci added that the water level in all streams is at a critical height and cannot be reduced. All those living next to streams must follow “municipality” announcements and be especially careful, he added.
The “mayor” of Kyrenia, Murat Senkul, in a post this morning spoke of a natural disaster in Kyrenia, Kioneli and Nicosia.
“We are sleepless and tired. I don’t want to say something wrong, but the information I have received is that we are facing a natural disaster in Kyrenia, Kioneli and Nicosia, and there is no clear position yet regarding the schools,” Senkul said.
“The dams are overflowing, about to overflow into streams, and we are experiencing intense rainfall again today. Don’t send your children to school”.

Problems also occurred on the Kyrenia-Nicosia road, whilst streams overflowed at two or three points within Kyrenia. A landslide occurred on the Agios Epiktitos-Kythrea road, and cleanup efforts are underway.
Rain also affected the Famagusta, Morphou and Lefka areas, but no incidents were reported.
