Amnesty International says Israel still committing genocide in Gaza despite ceasefire

Relevant News

Israel continues to commit genocide against Palestinians in Gaza despite last month’s ceasefire, Amnesty International said on Thursday.

The human rights organisation warned that the fragile truce, brokered by the United States and implemented on 10 October after two years of war, masks an ongoing campaign to destroy Palestinian life.

Amnesty secretary general Agnès Callamard said the reduction in military strikes and modest increase in aid shipments created a misleading impression of improving conditions. The fundamental pattern of Israeli conduct aimed at Palestinian destruction remains unchanged, she said.

Israel’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to the allegations when contacted by Agence France-Presse. The ministry has previously dismissed similar accusations as fabrications and lies.

December findings expanded

Amnesty first declared in December 2024 that Israel was committing genocide through three specific acts prohibited under the 1948 UN convention, including imposing conditions designed to physically destroy Palestinians.

The organisation’s Thursday update said Israel maintains severe restrictions on essential supplies and services needed for Palestinian survival, despite the ceasefire.

No meaningful shift has occurred in the conditions inflicted on Gaza’s population, and no evidence suggests Israel’s objectives have changed, Amnesty said.

Following the December report, Israel branded Amnesty a “deplorable and fanatical organisation” and insisted it acts lawfully whilst defending itself against the threat posed by Hamas’s 7 October 2023 assault.

Pattern of denial

Callamard said deliberate obstruction of lifesaving assistance to injured, malnourished and diseased Palestinians constitutes an ongoing threat to their collective survival.

A UN commission of inquiry concluded in September 2025 that genocide is taking place in Gaza, finding that Israeli forces have committed four of the five prohibited acts defined in the genocide convention since October 2023. Israel rejected the findings.

The convention lists five genocidal acts: killing group members, causing serious physical or mental harm, imposing destructive living conditions, preventing births, and forcibly removing children.

The International Court of Justice ordered Israel last year to prevent and punish incitement to genocide in Gaza.

War toll

Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 killed 1,221 people and triggered the devastating war. Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 69,799 Palestinians, according to Gaza health ministry figures the UN deems reliable.

Since the 10 October ceasefire, Israeli forces have killed 352 Palestinians, the ministry said.
