Teacher evaluation bill heads to article-by-article review as sticking points remain

Relevant News

The parliamentary education committee has wrapped up 48 hours of informal talks with stakeholders over the controversial bill seeking to change the teacher evaluation system, and substantive debate now begins.

Today, the committee will conduct a clause-by-clause examination of the bill in the presence of the executive only. Education ministry director general Giorgos Pantelis will attend the discussion, whilst minister Athina Michaelidou will participate online following her recent accident. The education ministry is awaiting an update on the outcome of the committee’s contacts, as well as on issues that may form the basis of amendments being prepared by parties and MPs.

The committee held informal consultations last Monday with the associations of secondary school directors and inspectors, with all education committee members and any other interested MPs taking part.

However, according to sources speaking to Phileleftheros, the contacts to date show that the sticking points remain the role of school principals in numerically evaluating teachers and the senior educator proposed by the education ministry.

Today’s discussion is expected to reveal whether these points will be modified or remain as they are until the end of the process and the tabling of the bill before the House plenary.
