Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides reportedly submitted his resignation to the President of the Republic.

According to a report in the newspaper Politis, Angelides submitted his resignation last Sunday, 16 November.

Information indicates he had a meeting with Nikos Christodoulides last Monday at the Presidential Palace, where the President tried to persuade Angelides to remain in his post, considering him irreplaceable according to the report, whilst a second meeting followed on Wednesday.

The same information states that Angelides’s reasons for resignation concern “damage to his reputation”, police corruption, as well as threats against him, through telephone calls, from serious offenders, convicted at the Central Prisons.

However, according to the report, after Wednesday’s meeting and the President’s intervention, Angelides reportedly committed to reconsider his decision to resign.

It is noted that from the Government’s side, for now, silence is being maintained. Sources we contacted to confirm the above information refused to comment on the news.
