The parents’ association of Vergina High School in Larnaca has distanced itself from a tree-planting event organised by the Jewish Community of Cyprus to honour US President Donald Trump.
In a written statement, the association made clear it has no involvement or connection with the event scheduled for Sunday 23 November, stressing it is neither participating in nor co-organising the initiative.
The association stressed the tree-planting will not take place on school grounds.
Honouring Trump over hostage release
An invitation sent by the Jewish Community of Cyprus described the planting of 48 trees as “symbols of life and hope” in honour of Trump, who helped secure the release of Israeli hostages and the signing of a ceasefire agreement.
According to the invitation, the event is set for 11am on Sunday 23 November on Ioannis Kakridis Street at Vergina High School.

Municipality unaware of Trump tribute
Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras said in statements on Wednesday that local authorities had been told the Jewish Community would plant 50 trees as part of its social and environmental contribution.
“They didn’t tell us there would be an event, nor did we know the tree-planting would be in honour of the United States President Donald Trump,” Vyras said. “We only saw this in the invitation they sent us.”
The mayor said the council had designated a traffic island outside—not inside—Vergina High School for the planting, contrary to what the invitation stated.
He added that the Jewish Community had told the municipality it would not install any plaques at the site.
