The Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Department of Antiquities have announced free entry to 16 monuments and archaeological sites on the weekend of 4 and 5 October, as part of this year’s European Heritage Days celebrations. The goal, they state, is to give citizens the opportunity to actively participate in this cultural festival and get a close look at the monuments that safeguard our collective memory.
It is noted that, specifically for this two-day event, sites that are usually closed on weekends will be open to the public. These include the archaeological sites of Tamassos, Idalion, Kition, and Kalavasos–Tenta, as well as the Royal Chapel in Pyrga.
Visitors will have the chance to explore Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage, connect with its history and culture, and make use of the new digital guides that have already been installed at some sites.
The European Heritage Days, established by the European Union and the Council of Europe, are one of the most significant cultural events in Europe, with thousands of monuments opening their doors to the public for free. Cyprus has participated since 1995 with various activities, but this year for the first time, by decision of the Deputy Minister of Culture, the Department of Antiquities is offering free admission to archaeological sites and monuments, thus honouring the event.
