Portugal announced on Friday that it will recognize a Palestinian state on Sunday. The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the official declaration will be made before next week’s High-Level Conference.
Earlier in the week, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel had mentioned during a visit to the UK that the country was considering the recognition. While neighboring Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, recognized Palestinian statehood in May 2024 and urged other EU nations to follow suit, Portugal had previously taken a more cautious stance. It had stated its preference to first establish a common position with other EU countries
