Students at Makarios Lyceum in Larnaca staged a one-hour lesson boycott on Wednesday morning after power cuts left their newly installed air conditioning units inoperative for the third consecutive day.
Power outages have forced lessons to continue under stifling conditions, with fans removed from some classrooms, according to complaints from students and parents.
Outdated electrical infrastructure blamed for power cuts
The electrical problems stem from the school’s ageing infrastructure, which was never upgraded to handle the increased power demands of air conditioning units, according to organised parents’ groups.
Larnaca School Board members and electricians have been working on site since morning to resolve the power supply issues.
Parents demand fans installed while repairs continue
Costas Costa, chairman of Larnaca’s organised parents’ association, called for immediate action to restore normal operations at the school.
“What we are asking for is that the power supply be restored quickly and the school return to normality,” Costa told Philenews.
Costa demanded that fans be installed in all classrooms while the outdated electrical system undergoes repairs, which he said could take months to complete.
“A comprehensive upgrade of the electrical installation at the school must begin so that these problems are not created,” Costa said.
