A dual investigation is underway at the Central Prisons in Nicosia following a former inmate’s allegation of sexual assault, with both police and prison authorities conducting separate inquiries into the incident.
According to sources, a recently released prisoner filed a complaint last week with Nicosia Police, alleging that two fellow inmates sexually assaulted him at Central Prisons during August. The complainant reportedly named the alleged perpetrators in his statement to authorities.
Following receipt of the complaint, officers visited the prison to conduct searches and take statements from inmates who shared the same wing as the former prisoner. Investigators are working to establish whether other prisoners witnessed or became aware of any incident during the alleged timeframe.
The two named inmates will be questioned as part of the police investigation, which remains in its preliminary stages. Authorities said that scientific and other examinations are expected to be conducted to verify the former prisoner’s allegations.
Prison management has been informed of the allegation and is conducting its own investigation to determine the conditions under which the alleged assault occurred and why prison guards failed to detect any incident. The internal review will examine security protocols and supervision procedures within the facility.
Police will examine closed-circuit television footage that was operating in the area where the alleged sexual assault reportedly took place.
The investigation seeks to establish the full circumstances of the alleged assault, including security lapses that may have allowed such an incident to occur within the supervised prison environment. Authorities are examining whether existing surveillance and supervision measures were adequate.
