Protest to be held in Nicosia over death of Thanasis Nicolaou, 20 years after army enlistment

A protest is being held on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. outside the Legal Service office in Nicosia, marking 20 years since Thanasis Nicolaou enlisted in the National Guard. The demonstration is organized by his mother, Andriana Nicolaou, who issued a public call for mass participation.

“Today marks 20 years since that morning in 2005, when the late Thanasis left for his army enlistment full of enthusiasm — for a six-month service. Instead, they kept him forever,” she wrote in an online post.

“He went into the army’s hell and signed his death warrant,” she added.

The protest follows recent developments in the long-running case, including the Legal Service’s decision not to pursue criminal charges and the dismissal of judge Doria Varoshiotou. According to the family, the judge was fired after refusing to alter her findings in the investigation into Nicolaou’s death.

“We will protest today, Saturday at 6:00 p.m., outside the Legal Service, the very authority responsible for all we are enduring,” Ms. Nicolaou said. “This is a humanitarian issue that concerns every Cypriot citizen. I urge everyone — regardless of color, party, or ideology — to join us and raise their voices against the injustices we face.”

“Thanasis is not the first victim, and Judge Varoshiotou is not the first victim of corruption,” she continued. “The motive behind these unacceptable and criminal decisions is nothing less than the continued cover-up of crimes and the impunity of those responsible, which breed criminality and deepen corruption. That is why I call on all citizens to protest.”

“We demand the cleansing of the justice system. We demand a rule-of-law state,” she concluded.
