Attorney General Giorgos Savvides has rejected the family’s request for criminal prosecutions in the Thanasis Nicolaou death case, citing insufficient evidence to proceed with charges.

In a multi-page letter to family lawyer Nicos Clerides, Savvides stated that two recent criminal investigators’ reports contained no new evidence to overturn the previous decision against pursuing prosecutions due to lack of adequate testimony, according to reliable philenews sources.

The attorney general also referenced changes in testimony by key witnesses, noting that the prosecution could not rely on these witnesses in any potential trial.

Forensic pathologist cleared of conspiracy charges

Regarding forensic pathologist Panicos Stavrianos, the Law Office determined based on criminal investigators’ findings that no evidence demonstrated he conspired to cover up the crime, therefore ruling out criminal prosecution.

The letter stated that neither police officers nor military personnel could face criminal charges because intentional neglect of duty would need to be proven, which did not emerge from the established facts.

Family request for private prosecution denied

The attorney general confirmed that no criminal prosecutions would be filed by the Law Office, either to be handled by its officials or by private lawyers as requested by the family.

The decision follows extensive review of investigative materials and represents the latest development in the long-running case that has attracted significant public attention.

The family had sought both direct prosecutions by the attorney general and the option for private legal representatives to pursue criminal charges independently.
