The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has reported concerns about a suspected mass cat poisoning in Astromeritis, western Nicosia, after dozens of animals systematically cared for by residents disappeared within days.
The party’s Animal Action Group expressed serious concern about the mass disappearance and deaths, which has caused distress and anger in the local community.
According to testimonies from animal-loving residents, dozens of cats that were being systematically cared for vanished within just a few days. Several animals were found dead, leading to suspicions of mass poisoning.
Police have been informed and are investigating the case.
The organisation reminded the public that animal poisoning constitutes a serious criminal offence under Article 4 of the Animal Protection and Welfare Law, which states:
“It is prohibited for any person intentionally and without reasonable cause to administer or supply or allow the administration or supply of any poison or other harmful substance to any animal or to cause such substance to be taken by any animal”.
The Animal Action Group has called for police to fully investigate the case and strictly enforce legislation. The organisation also appealed for anyone with information to report it immediately to authorities.
“We are in 2025. The time has come to show, in practice, respect and love towards animals,” the group stated. “The way a society treats its most vulnerable creatures reflects its true face”.
The statement concluded with the question: “Do we want to live in a society that brutally exterminates or in a world that protects?”.
