The meeting between the two leaders on May 5th will be held in a place historically linked with efforts at reaching a Cyprus settlement. The Ledra Palace has been a point of reference for the Cyprus issue, even though it hasn’t been offered up as a negotiations venue for over two decades.
On Monday, Nikos Christodoulides and Ersin Tatar will meet at the buffer zone hotel to continue their discussion on confidence-building measures, in accordance with what was agreed upon in Geneva last March during an informal five-party meeting, the two sides plus guarantor powers.
The reason for the change of venue is the holding of the first meeting of the youth technical committee, established only recently.
It was agreed that the two leaders would hold a meeting with the members of the committee before their own tete a tete.
The establishment of the technical committee on youth was the most significant of the agreements reached in Geneva.
On other issues under discussion, partial progress is noted, but there’s been deadlock on opening four new crossing points.
Crossing points will be on the agenda, but it is far from certain that discussions will result in any specific announcement.
