In a week-long crackdown on undeclared foreign employment spanning April 25th to May 2nd, the Aliens and Immigration Service identified 24 employers unlawfully hiring third country nationals, involving 34 individuals in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts.

The employers were formally charged and issued administrative fines amounting to €156,000.

The undeclared employment of third country nationals is recognised as a major pull factor for irregular migration to Cyprus, police says. Combating this practice is a key component of a strategy to reduce the influx of undocumented migrants and manage the broader challenge.

The legislation pertaining to the illegal employment of third country nationals carries penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment, a fine of €20,000, or both. Furthermore, the Labour Ministry can impose administrative fines on employers for each individual employed unlawfully, in addition to any judicial penalties.

For the period covering 2024 and up to May 1st, 2025, the Aliens and Immigration Service has recorded a total of 512 such cases. This has led to the prosecution of 499 employers and the arrest of 799 third country nationals.

Authorities are highlighting their commitment to ongoing campaigns and inspections of hotels, construction sites, and catering establishments to vigorously combat illegal employment.
