Two men are being treated in separate hospitals in Cyprus after being bitten by vipers in unrelated incidents.
The men, aged 74 and 80, both received anti-venom serum and are in stable condition following the incidents which occurred within days of each other.
A 74-year-old man from Nicosia was bitten on his upper limb by a viper while in a field in Limassol district on April 22, according to hospital sources. He was immediately transported to the Accident and Emergency Department of Limassol General Hospital where he received anti-venom treatment.
The patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 24 hours before being transferred to a ward. His condition has improved and doctors expect him to be discharged soon.
In a separate incident on April 25, an 80-year-old man from a Limassol village was bitten on his lower limb by a viper while collecting capers. He was taken by private vehicle to the Accident and Emergency Department of Limassol General Hospital where he also received anti-venom serum.
The man was subsequently transferred by ambulance to the ICU of Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains in stable and improving condition, doctors said.
The State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) has issued an appeal to the public to be particularly cautious during this period.
“If you encounter a viper or other venomous snake, move away from the area immediately,” SHSO said in a statement.
