The Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO) has announced the closure of Makarios Stadium, one of the island’s most historic sports venues, effective September 4, 2025.
In a letter to clubs using the stadium as their home ground, CSO officials stated that the facility has “reached the end of its life cycle” and can no longer meet safety requirements for operating permits from relevant authorities.
“None of the main stadium infrastructure will be available for use,” the CSO announcement specified, adding that only the main and auxiliary field surfaces will remain accessible for training purposes, without changing room facilities.
Makarios Stadium has served as a symbol of Cypriot football for decades, hosting major Nicosia clubs including APOEL, Omonia and Olympiakos, as well as the national team.
The CSO has committed to supporting affected clubs and promised further updates in the coming weeks regarding alternative arrangements.
The closure marks the end of an era for Cypriot sports, with the ageing venue no longer viable despite its significant historical importance to the sport on the island.
