Police began a nationwide speed control campaign on Monday that will run until Sunday as part of a European-wide traffic enforcement initiative.
The operation, conducted in cooperation with the European Traffic Police Network (ROADPOL), will focus on speed limit enforcement aimed at preventing serious and fatal road collisions, police said in a statement.
“Excessive speed is a very important factor in determining the outcome of a road collision and is considered one of the main causes of serious and fatal road accidents,” the statement said.
According to available statistics for the three-year period of 2021-2023, speed was the second leading cause of road deaths in Cyprus, accounting for 12.6% of fatalities.
