Price relief for consumers reported in February despite vegetable cost surge

The majority of basic consumer goods in Cyprus recorded price decreases in February, according to the latest data from the Consumer Protection Service’s Price Observatory, reflecting a broader easing of inflationary pressures across the economy.

Of the 45 basic product categories monitored, 32 showed price reductions, while the remaining 13 registered increases—with six of these increases being less than 1 percent, according to the latest report.

The findings align with the Cyprus Statistical Service’s data showing annual inflation slowing to 1.9 percent in February, down from 2.5 percent in January and 2.6 percent in December.

Despite the overall positive trend, several product categories experienced substantial price increases. Fresh vegetables and greens saw the most significant jump, rising 14 percent compared to January and 45.6 percent year-on-year.

Frozen burgers also recorded a notable increase of 16.5 percent month-on-month and 12.8 percent annually.

Additional categories with price increases included:

  • Fresh fish and molluscs (+8.0 percent)
  • Cypriot coffee (+1.4 percent)
  • Cylinder gas (+2.1 percent)

Conversely, significant price decreases were observed in:

  • Frozen molluscs/shellfish (-19.8 percent)
  • Frozen fish (-7.4 percent)
  • Cheeses (-2.7 percent)
  • Breakfast cereals (-2.0 percent)

The February inflation data revealed broader economic patterns, with clothing and footwear prices declining by 5.1 percent, while education costs increased by 3.7 percent and food and non-alcoholic beverages rose by 2.25 percent. Agricultural products showed the largest annual increase at 6.9 percent.

The Price Observatory bases its findings on weighted average prices for 250 basic products, drawing from daily quantities and prices collected from 400 retail outlets across Cyprus.

The Consumer Protection Service emphasises that the Price Observatory is intended exclusively for consumer information purposes and does not constitute commercial recommendations. The service notes that product quality may vary, encouraging consumers to conduct their own market research before making purchasing decisions.
