Cyprus will implement a blacklist next month targeting motorists who have not paid fines issued by traffic cameras, with checks to be conducted at airports, ports and checkpoints.
The system, to be known as “photoradarlist,” is nearly ready for launch in April, according to information obtained by philenews.
The company managing the speed camera system already possesses the list, which will be distributed to all entry and exit points of the Republic as well as checkpoints once final approvals are complete.
Under the new measures, anyone travelling abroad, returning to Cyprus or crossing into the occupied part of the island will be checked for outstanding fines.
Those found on the blacklist will be directed to a separate area where they will be served with their fine notices before being allowed to continue their journey.
There are currently more than 250,000 notices remaining undelivered—a situation concerning both traffic police and other stakeholders who are seeking solutions to ensure the camera system fulfils its purpose of preventing road accidents.
More than 45,000 drivers have already paid their fines following a police announcement in January that offenders would face court proceedings if payments were not made by March 31.
Many motorists have searched the management company’s website to discover outstanding fines, which they subsequently paid to avoid inconvenience and additional costs.
The police deadline for payment expires on March 31, after which criminal prosecutions will commence against non-payers. Legal action will begin with older cases before moving to more recent ones.
According to sources, some fines dating back to 2021, when the speed camera system was first implemented, remain unpaid.
The police call for drivers to locate and pay their fines was raised in Parliament, with the Law Office explaining that this provided an opportunity for motorists to check for and pay outstanding fines if they wished.
Regarding court proceedings, it was clarified that initiating these remains at the Attorney General’s discretion.
