Thanasis Nicolaou mother accuses authorities of 20-year cover-up after criminal probe handed to Cabinet

The mother of Thanasis Nicolaou has made fresh allegations of a cover-up in her son’s death case, claiming military and police officials have concealed the truth for two decades.

Andriana Nicolaou expressed dissatisfaction with the findings of criminal investigators Lambros Pappas and Thanasis Athanasiou, which were submitted to the Cabinet today.

“The obvious crime remains without murderers,” she told local media, adding that those responsible have remained free for 20 years.

Speaking to Sigma TV, Nicolaou directly accused forensic pathologist Panikos Stavrianos of being “the key to the cover-up and mass concealment,” along with police and military officers.

“They knew what he was going through with drug addicts and troublemakers in his unit. When I encouraged him to speak to his superiors, they didn’t protect him. The day after he went to the chief of staff’s office to talk, he was found dead,” she said.

Nicolaou claimed that attempts to conceal the truth continued through the Law Office, saying, “They made me look a fool” throughout these years.

The mother expressed concern about the future handling of the case, stating: “We don’t want the case to go to the Attorney General in any way, because we’ll be in the same situation again.”

She called for justice, noting that “no judge and no government will bring my child back, but they can restore his memory by punishing the guilty.”

Nicolaou also demanded immediate separation of the Attorney General’s powers, arguing that “it’s not possible to be both legal advisor to the state and public prosecutor.”

Thanasis Nicolaou’s body was found under a bridge in Alassa in 2005 and his death was deemed by the army and police as a suicide. But after his remains were exhumed in 2020 over suspicions of foul play, further autopsies showed he had been beaten and strangled.
