The Department of Meteorology on Friday issued a yellow warning for extremely low temperatures in mountainous regions, with forecasts showing temperatures dropping to minus 9 degrees Celsius due to a cold air mass system named Coral.

The warning will be in effect from 22:00 local time on Saturday, February 22, until 08:00 on Sunday, February 23.

The Coral system, characterised by a cold air mass, is currently affecting the island and is expected to bring locally extremely low temperatures, particularly in higher elevation areas, the Department said.

The yellow alert specifically targets the higher mountain regions where temperatures are expected to reach their lowest point of minus 9 degrees Celsius overnight Saturday.
