A joint operation by prison authorities and police in Cyprus’s Central Prisons led to the discovery of mobile phones, chargers, a smart watch and alcohol during early morning cell searches on Friday.
The contraband items were found in the recently inaugurated Wing 11, which houses inmates previously held in police stations due to prison overcrowding, as well as convicts who had partially served their sentences.
A separate police search with a warrant was conducted in Wing 9, targeting a specific inmate’s cell, but yielded no illegal items.
Prison officials said all seized items would undergo forensic examination, with disciplinary action to be taken against the inmates involved.
The searches come as Cyprus prepares to implement new legislation that would criminalise possession of mobile phones and other prohibited items by both inmates and prison officers.
