Coral cold snap may bring snow in lowlands and record low temperatures

Cyprus is set to experience a cold snap with snow possible even in lowland and coastal areas, as a polar air mass approaches the island.

While the Meteorological Department forecasts snow mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, local forecaster Kitasweather suggests snowfall or sleet could reach lowland areas and coastlines between Friday night and Monday.

Temperatures are expected to plummet up to 11 degrees Celsius below normal levels during the weekend and Monday, potentially breaking minimum temperature records in some areas of the island.

According to KitasWeather, the Troodos mountain range has a 70% chance of snow on Saturday, with 30-40% probability of rain or snow in other areas. Sunday’s snow probability ranges from 25-40% across the island, rising to 60% at Troodos (1,900 metres).

The weather system is expected to bring isolated rain throughout the weekend. Conditions could produce snow in inland plains and snow, sleet, or hail in coastal regions.

The cold spell is forecast to ease from Tuesday, with temperatures gradually returning to seasonal averages by late February or early March.

Despite the unusual weather event, February remains significantly dry with no substantial improvement expected in the island’s water reserves.
