Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou has ordered an investigation into a dog shelter in Meniko following complaints about poor living conditions.
The Veterinary Services conducted an inspection of the facility and, working alongside animal welfare organisations present at the site, initiated the relocation of dogs, with priority given to puppies, ministry officials said.
The Veterinary Services have issued directives for improving conditions at the shelter.
Among the complaints, reports emerged of 21 dogs, including three females that recently gave birth, being transferred to a holding facility in the Meniko community.
One documented case involved a female dog that gave birth at the facility “in a corner, on cold stone, terrified and angry,” according to social media posts from a witness.
Authorities are now seeking assistance from the public. “Anyone who recognises their dog, wishes to adopt a puppy, or volunteers willing to help should contact the Agioi Trimithias community council or the Kokkinotrimithia complex secretariat,” a community notice stated.
