Toyota and Volvo issue guidance on airbag recall procedures

Relevant News

Toyota Motor Corp and Volvo Cars have issued separate guidance for vehicle owners affected by car recalls in Cyprus.

Toyota has established an online verification system for affected vehicles, differentiating between European-specification vehicles and those from other markets.

Owners of European-specification Toyota vehicles, including those from Cyprus and the UK, are directed to submit their details through a dedicated online form. A separate verification process has been established for non-European specification vehicles from markets including Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia.

Vehicle owners unable to access the online systems can submit a copy of their vehicle registration document at any Toyota showroom across Cyprus. The company has established a dedicated helpline at +357 22285700 for Takata recall enquiries.

Meanwhile, Volvo Cars’ distributor CTC Automotive clarified that their recall is unrelated to the Takata airbag issue and pertains to a previously announced campaign affecting S60, S80, V70, and XC70 models manufactured between 2001 and 2009.

The Department of Road Transport launched an urgent recall campaign affecting approximately 82,000 vehicles with faulty airbags and brakes, giving owners eight months to complete necessary repairs or face vehicle registration suspension.

The Takata airbag recall is one of the largest automotive safety recalls in history, affecting multiple vehicle manufacturers globally. It is estimated that at least 27 deaths and hundreds of injuries worldwide have been attributed to the defective Takata airbags.

The Takata airbag defect, caused by a chemical component that can deteriorate in hot conditions, risks explosive deployment that could project metal fragments into vehicle cabins, potentially causing serious injury to occupants.

In Cyprus, at least three deaths have been linked to the faulty Takata airbags.
