Remember when the mere mention of Chinese products would bring a smirk to our faces, sometimes even bordering on a scoff? Whether consciously or not, we had mentally filed Chinese products under the category of ‘cheap and poor quality’ – the exact opposite of how we viewed European and American goods.
Yet here we are in 2025, and China appears to have made remarkable strides, even overtaking the Americans in some areas. While their products might still be competitively priced, the ‘poor quality’ label certainly no longer applies. You’ve likely heard about DeepSeek in recent days.
This new artificial intelligence tool is China’s answer to American tech companies. Within hours of its release, it created quite a buzz with its technical capabilities, shooting to the number one spot for downloads and searches on the Apple Store. Reports indicate that it offers users all the features and tools that OpenAI’s American counterpart does, but – crucially – at a significantly lower cost, both for users and its developers.
And that’s not all. According to the Financial Times, the five largest tech companies investing in artificial intelligence (Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta) collectively lost nearly $750 billion in market value before markets opened on Monday.
